Description

o-Chlorostyrene is a flammable, colorless liquid. Molecular weight =138.60; Specific gravity(H2O:1) =1.1; Boiling point =188.8℃; Freezing/Meltingpoint =-63.3℃; Vapor pressure =0.96 mmHg at 25℃;Flash point =58.8℃. Practically insoluble in water.

If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure,begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit

Before entering confinedspace where o-chlorostyrene may be present, check to makesure that an explosive concentration does not exist. Store intightly closed containers in a cool, well-ventilated area awayfrom strong oxidizers. Metal containers involving the transfer of this chemical should be grounded and bonded. Wherepossible, automatically pump liquid from drums or otherstorage containers to process containers. Drums must beequipped with self-closing valves, pressure vacuum bungs,and flame arresters. Use only nonsparking tools and equipment, especially when opening and closing containers ofthis chemical. Sources of ignition, such as smoking andopen flames, are prohibited where this chemical is used,handled, or stored in a manner that could create a potentialfire or explosion hazard

Repeated exposures may damagethe liver and kidneys. Animal studies show hematuria(blood in the urine), proteinuria, acidosis, enlarged liver,jaundice.

Personal Protective Methods

Wear protective gloves andclothing to prevent any reasonable probability of skin contact. Safety equipment suppliers/manufacturers can providerecommendations on the most protective glove/clothingmaterial for your operation. All protective clothing (suits,gloves, footwear, headgear) should be clean, available eachday, and put on before work. Contact lenses should not beworn when working with this chemical. Wear splash-proofchemical goggles and face shield unless full face-piecerespiratory protection is worn. Employees should washimmediately with soap when skin is wet or contaminated.Provide emergency showers and eyewash.

Fire Extinguishing

This chemical is a combustible liquid.The heat of fire produces poisonous gases, including hydrogen chloride, chlorine, and phosgene. Use dry chemical,carbon dioxide, or alcohol foam extinguishers. Vapors areheavier than air and will collect in low areas. Vapors maytravel long distances to ignition sources and flashback.Vapors in confined areas may explode when exposed tofire. Containers may explode in fire. Storage containers andparts of containers may rocket great distances, in manydirections. If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream users of potentially contaminatedwaters. Notify local health and fire officials and pollutioncontrol agencies. From a secure, explosion-proof location,use water spray to cool exposed containers. If coolingstreams are ineffective (venting sound increases in volumeand pitch, tank discolors, or shows any signs of deforming),withdraw immediately to a secure position. If employeesare expected to fight fires, they must be trained andequipped in OSHA 1910.156. The only respirators recommended for firefighting are self-contained breathing apparatuses that have full face-pieces and are operated in apressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode.
