Hexadecanoic acid, also known as palmitic acid, is a white crystal at room temperature, insoluble in water, and soluble in organic solvents such as ether, chloroform, and acetone. Palmitic acid is one of the most widely distributed fatty acids in nature. It is widely present in various fats and oils in the form of glycerides, such as tallow, palm oil, lacquer fat, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, peanut oil, corn germ oil, fish oil, milk fat, cow, sheep, pig fat, etc. It is widely present in many animal and plant species as an ester (i.e. natural wax) formed with higher saturated monohydric alcohols.

Application

A simple ester of palmitic acid, mainly used in the plastic industry. Its alkali metal salts are soluble in water and have a cleaning effect, making it one of the main components of soap and soap. Other metal salts are insoluble in water and are used in lubricants, pharmaceutical industries, cosmetics, as well as waterproofing and fungicides. The main source of palmitic acid is oil, which is separated by saponification and acidification of the oil.

Purpose

Mainly used as a surfactant, when used as a non-ionic type, it can be used for polyoxyethylene sorbitol anhydride monopalmitate and sorbitol anhydride monopalmitate. The former is made into a lipophilic emulsifier and used in all cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, while the latter can be used as an emulsifier in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food, a dispersant for pigment inks, and also as a defoamer; When used as an anionic type, it is made into sodium palmitate and used as a raw material for fatty acid soap, plastic emulsifier, etc; Zinc palmitate is used as a stabilizer for cosmetics and plastics; In addition to being used as a surfactant, it is also used as a raw material for isopropyl palmitic acid, methyl ester, butyl ester, amine compounds, chlorides, etc; Among them, isopropyl palmitate is an oil phase raw material for cosmetics, which can be used to make lipstick, various creams, hair oils, hair creams, etc; Other materials such as methyl palmitate can be used as lubricant additives and surfactants; Antislip agents for PVC, etc; Candles, soap, lubricants, synthetic detergents, softeners, and other raw materials; Used as a spice, it is allowed to be used as an edible spice according to GB2760-1996 regulations in China; Also used as a food defoamer.
