2,5-Bis(5-tert-butyl-2-benzoxazolyl) thiophene: Uses as an Organic Brightener

Oct 24,2019

2,5-Bis(5-tert-butyl-2-benzoxazolyl) thiophene is also known as BBOT. The compound is also known under the trademarks Uvitex OB, Bentex OB and Fluorescent Brightener 184. The compound is a bright yellow-green crystal powder. Its melting point is 196-203°C, Decomposition temperature is larger than 220°C. It is insoluble in water, dissolved in paraffin fat, miner oil, wax and common organic solvents. It is stable and incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. The hue of the fluorescent light is blue light. The maximum wavelength of absorptive light is 375 nm (ethyl alcohol). It is mainly used in brightening of thermoplastic plastics, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), styrene-acrylonitrile resin (SAN), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), acrylic resin, polyester fibre, paint, coating, and printing ink.

The optical application and photostability of BBOT in organic solvents and various polymer matrices have already been studied earlier. BBOT is a well-known organic brightener in dye industry and was also reported as an electron transporting material alone or components in organic electroluminescent devices [1,2]. BBOT is used as a base for photovoltaic applications. BBOT molecule is elongated ellipsoid of a width 2.7 Å and length 12.5 Å [3]. Due to the use of photovoltaic are the most interesting for the absorption maxima and related mixtures and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels. Considered material were used as electron acceptor. BBOT is multifunctional material, ready to photovoltaic applications. It can be applied in photovoltaic cells devices and organic diodes [4].
