Steps:

Synthesis of 1,3,5-tris(bromomethyl)benzene (2)
Mesitylene 1 (8.6 g, 71.5 mmol), NBS (38.2 g, 214.6 mmol) and benzoyl peroxide (5.19 g, 21.4 mmol) and CCl4 (100 ml) were taken in a 150-ml RB flask. The reaction mixture was refluxed for about 6 h at 70 °C. After completion of the reaction time, the imide was removed by filtration and the solvent in the filtrate was evaporated to give the pale yellow solid of 1,3,5-tribromomesitylene. Yield: 96 %. m.p. 86-87 C; 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) d: 7.35 (s, 3H), 4.45 (s, 6H); 13C NMR(75 MHz, CDCl3)d: 139.00, 129.55, 32.19.
