Example 6
(2) Preparation of 1,3-propanesultone
To 110kg 3-hydroxy-1-propanesulfonic acid was added 1.5kg of pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate and 3kg zeolite. Dehydration reaction was done at 55°C for 2.5 hours. The reaction was subjected to distillation and the fraction 147-149°C was taken. 1kg of calcium oxide was added and was heated at reflux for 2 hours to give 95.5kg 1,3-propanesultone with a total yield of 99.4% and a purity of 99.99% or more containing less than 0.02%.
