Cyclobutyl acetyl chloride (8.6g, 64.8mmole) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of pyridine (10.48ml, 129.6 mmole) in methanol (105ml). The solution was stirred overnight at room temperature. Most of the excess methanol was removed under vacuum. Solution was poured onto 150ml water, extracted with diethyl ether (3x 125ml). Combined extracts were washed with 25ml 10% HCl, water (25ml) and saturated sodium bicarbonate (25ml), water (25ml), saturated sodium chloride (25ml). Ether was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and solvent removed to give 5.9Og methyl cyclobutylacetate
