27 Example 27 - Cyclobutylacetonitrile
Bromomethylcyclobutane (29.30g, 0.2 mol) was added dropwise to a suspension of sodiumcyanide (14.65g, 0.3 mol) in 230ml DMSO at 60°C, whereupon the temperature of the reactionincreased to 75°C. The mixture was stirred at 70°C for three hours, cooled to room temperatureand carefully poured onto 1200ml crushed ice. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes and10 extracted with diethyl ether (3x400ml). The combined organic phases were washed with 6NHCI (400ml), sat. NaHC03 (400ml) and sat. NaCI (400ml), dried over Na2S04 and the solventwas evaporated to yield 16.37g of cyclobutylacetonitrile (88%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCI3): 2.61(m, 1 H, CH), 2.39 ( d, J = 6.69 Hz, 2H, CH2CN), 2.18-2.10 (m, 2H, CH2), 1.95-1.73 (m, 4H, CH2).
