Reaction Conditions:

with hydrogenchloride;magnesium in diethyl ether

Steps:

R.32 Reference Example 32
Reference Example 32 A solution of 4-bromophenylmagnesium bromide prepared from p-dibromobenzene (25.0 g), magnesium (2.43 g) and diethyl ether (250 ml) was added dropwise to a solution of diethyl oxalate (32.5 g) in diethyl ether (250 ml) at -78° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere. After stirring for 1 hour, the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to 0° C., and 1N HCl was added. The diethyl ether layer separated, washed with aqueous sodium bicarbonate and with saturated aqueous sodium chloride, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. The residue was subjected to column chromatography on silica gel to obtain an oil from a fraction eluted with ethyl acetate-hexane (1:15, v/v).
