Phenacetin (4-ethoxyacetanilide) was treated with slowly current of gaseous hydrogen chloride for 15 hours at 150°C. On cooling the product was poured into 20 volumes of water and heated. Then it was cooled to room temperature, filtered off and excess of alkali was added. The precipitated crude product was at first re-crystallized from 60% ethanol, then from benzene-ligroin to give pure acetamidine as a white needles; MP: 121°C. | [Brand name]
