e) An aqueous solution of potassium permanganate (174 mg, 1.1 mmol) was slowly added dropwise to a solution of (5-bromo-4-chloropyridin-2-yl) methanol (187 mg, 0.846 mmol) dissolved in 10% sodium carbonate (1 mL). After 2 hours of reaction, the mixture was filtered through diatomaceous earth and the pH of the filtrate was subsequently adjusted to about 4. The precipitate precipitated was collected by filtration. Finally, it was dried by azeotropic drying with toluene to give the white powdery product 5-bromo-4-chloro-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (135 mg, 68% yield): lcms (ES) m/z = 237 (M + H)+. | [References]
