Adding active zinc oxide to rubber compounds imparts excellent abrasion resistance, tear resistance, and elasticity. It is used for coloring paints, inks, and coated fabrics; as a resist agent in the printing and dyeing industry; in the match industry to neutralize the acidity of kraft paper glue and enhance its adhesiveness; in the pharmaceutical industry as a raw material for adhesive plasters; and in the manufacture of pigments such as zinc chrome yellow, zinc acetate, zinc carbonate, and zinc chloride. It is also used as a catalyst in methanol synthesis, a desulfurizing agent in ammonia synthesis, and in glass and glaze production. Fine-grained active zinc oxide (approximately 0.23 μm in diameter) can be used as a light stabilizer for polyolefins and polyvinyl chloride plastics. Zinc oxide is also used in pressure-sensitive materials, photocatalysis, photoelectrodes, coatings, and color television developing. A coating made with transparent zinc oxide can effectively prevent discoloration. Besides its use in cosmetics, this zinc oxide is also used as a raw material in automotive paints, furniture and building materials, inks, and oil paints, and as an anti-aging agent for rubber and plastics. Recently developed transparent food packaging films involve coating polyethylene film with transparent zinc oxide, which improves the film's UV resistance while protecting food quality. With the development of high technology, people are developing and utilizing zinc oxide whisker materials as reinforcing materials for metals and ceramics, as well as materials for ceramic and plastic filter membranes, gas sensing elements, electromagnetic shielding materials, and zinc oxide materials with large specific surface areas.
