DAEP is an obsolete organophosphate insecticide. Little information is known about its environmental fate or its ecotoxicology. DAEP is an acetyl cholinesterase inhibitor and a neurotoxin. | [Production Methods]
Although detailed manufacturing records for DAEP are not published, its chemical class allows a reliable reconstruction of its industrial production. Like other organophosphate insecticides of the 1960s–1980s, DAEP would have been manufactured in multipurpose organophosphate facilities beginning with preparation of a phosphorochloridate or phosphorothiochloridate intermediate, produced by reacting phosphorus oxychloride or phosphorus thiochloride with the appropriate alcohols under strictly anhydrous, acid scavenged conditions. In parallel, the amine based side chain characteristic of DAEP (reflected in its classification as an acetylcholinesterase inhibiting organophosphate) would be synthesised and purified. These components were then coupled in a controlled nucleophilic substitution step, typically in aromatic or chlorinated solvents, with careful temperature control to manage hydrogen chloride evolution. After completion, the crude mixture underwent neutralisation, phase separation, solvent exchange, and vacuum stripping to yield technical grade DAEP. | [Mechanism of action]
