Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) plays an important role in neuronal proliferation and vascular cells. It also plays an athero-protective role. Mutations in the SIRT1 gene affects the metabolismcholesterol and f at deposition. SIRT1 has the ability to intermediate the insulin resistance through an inflammatory processreactive oxygen speciesgluconeogenesis and adiponectin level. It is an NAD(+)-dependent histone deacetylase involved in various nuclear events such as transcriptionDNA replicationand DNA repair. SIRT1 protein binds and deacetylates the p53 protein. Expression of wild type SIRT1 in human cells reduces the transcriptional activity of p53 indicating th at SIRT1 is involved in the regulation of p53 function via deacetylation. |
