Aluminum chloride (28.3 g, 0.212 mol) was added to a solution of 2-butyl-3-(4-methoxybenzoyl)-5-nitrobenzofuran (30 g, 0.084 mol) in chlorobenzene (180 mL). The resulting mixture was heated at 85°C for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to 60°C and quenched with water (120 mL). Further cooling to 35°C was performed, and dichloromethane (150 mL) was added and stirred for approximately 30 minutes. The two phases were separated, the organic layer was washed with water (150 mL), and the mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. Chlorobenzene (60 mL) was added to the residue and stirred at 0°C for 2 hours. The separated solid was filtered off, the mixture was washed with chlorobenzene (15 mL), and dried at 65°C to give 2-butyl-3-(4-hydroxybenzoyl)-5-nitrobenzofuran.
