Step 1: To a solution of 3-bromo-4-methylphenol (0.20 g) in dichloromethane (3 mL) cooled in an ice bath, tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (0.18 g) and triethylamine (0.23 mL) were added. Subsequently, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (13 mg) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. Upon completion of the reaction, it was diluted with the addition of dichloromethane and the organic layer was washed sequentially with 1 M hydrochloric acid, aqueous NaHCO3 and brine and then dried with anhydrous MgSO4. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: cyclohexane/ethyl acetate) to give (3-bromo-4-methylphenoxy)(tert-butyl)dimethylsilane. Yield: 0.25 g (78% theoretical yield); LC (Method 1): tR = 1.59 min.
