| Hazard Information | Back Directory | [Uses]
A metabolite of Demeton-S-methyl (D231370). An organophosphorus pesticide biomarker. | [Description]
Demeton-S-methyl sulfone is an organophosphate insecticide. Very little data is available regarding its environmental fate or its ecotoxicology. Demeton-O-methyl sulfone is highly toxic if consumed, is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and a neurotoxin. | [Definition]
ChEBI:Demeton-S-methylsulphon is a sulfone. | [Production Methods]
Demeton-S-methyl sulfone is commercially produced by oxidizing demeton-S-methyl, an organophosphorothioate compound, to its sulfone derivative using strong oxidising agents such as hydrogen peroxide or peracids. The process begins with the synthesis of demeton-S-methyl via the reaction of O,O-dimethyl phosphorothioate with 2-(ethylthio)ethanol. This intermediate is then subjected to controlled oxidation, converting the sulphur atom to a sulfone group while preserving the phosphoric ester structure. The reaction is typically carried out in organic solvents under mild heating, followed by purification through crystallisation or distillation. | [Mechanism of action]
Systemic with contact and stomach action. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor. | [Pesticide Type]
