Lithium aluminum hydride (1.45 g) was slowly added to a solution of ethyl 5-phenyl-3-pyridinecarboxylate (8.60 g) in tetrahydrofuran (100 ml) at 0°C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. Subsequently, sodium sulfate decahydrate (13.40 g) was added and stirring was continued for 30 minutes at room temperature. After completion of the reaction, the insoluble precipitate was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting colorless crystals were collected by filtration to afford 5-phenyl-3-pyridylmethanol (4.82 g, 69% yield). The product was further purified by solvent recrystallization from ethyl acetate-hexane mixture. The melting point was determined to be 71-72 °C.
