General procedure for the synthesis of 1-(1-bromoethyl)-4-nitrobenzene from 1-(4-nitrophenyl)ethanol: A mixture of 1-(4-nitrophenyl)ethanol (10.0 g, 66 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (11.8 g, 66 mmol) and benzoyl peroxide (160 mg, 0.66 mmol) in carbon tetrachloride (100 mL) was The solution was heated to reflux and the reaction was continued for 1.5 hours.
