This water-soluble reagent (FW = 491.26 g/mol), also known as phenolphthalein diphosphate and phenolphthalein phosphate, is an alternative substrate for phosphomonoesterases (e.g., alkaline phosphatase), as is the monophosphate. Hydrolysis of the phosphate group generates free phenolphthalein which is red in alkaline conditions.
