The commercial production of endothal dipotassium typically begins with the synthesis of endothall which itself starts with production of its bicyclic dicarboxylic acid structure, 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dicarboxylic acid. This involves a Diels-Alder reaction between maleic anhydride and furan, forming the oxabicyclic ring system. The resulting adduct is then hydrolysed to yield the diacid form of endothal.
