Dinoseb acetate was manufactured by esterifying dinoseb (2 sec butyl 4,6 dinitrophenol) with acetic anhydride or acetyl chloride in a controlled, anhydrous reaction typical of phenolic ester production. Industrial production began with synthesis or procurement of technical grade dinoseb, itself produced by nitration of a sec butyl substituted phenol. The phenolic hydroxyl group was then acetylated in the presence of an acid catalyst, with careful temperature control to prevent decomposition of the heat sensitive dinitrophenol core. After completion, the reaction mixture was neutralised, washed, and subjected to solvent removal, filtration, and vacuum drying to yield technical grade dinoseb acetate. | [Mechanism of action]
