[Production Methods]

Commercial production of silatrane follows the well established industrial route for building the silatrane cage structure, a bicyclic 1 aza 5 silatricyclo[3.3.3]undecane framework. Generally, silatranes are produced by condensing trialkoxysilanes with triethanolamine type ligands, typically under basic catalysis that promotes intramolecular transesterification to close the cage structure. Industrial processes use an alkoxide base such as sodium methoxide to activate the silane, followed by controlled heating to drive cyclisation and eliminate alcohol by products. The reaction is solvent assisted or solvent free depending on the manufacturer, and purification involves removing unreacted silane and low molecular weight alcohols.
