Butoxycarboxim is typically produced through a two-step chemical synthesis process starting from readily available precursors. In the first step, the intermediate butocarboxim is synthesised by nucleophilic substitution of 3-chloro-2-butanone with methyl mercaptan to form 3-(methylthio)-2-butanone, followed by oximation with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to yield the oxime, and subsequent acylation of the oxime hydroxyl group with methyl isocyanate to introduce the N-methylcarbamate moiety, resulting in a mixture of isomeric butocarboxim. This intermediate is then oxidised in the second step using peracetic acid (or a similar oxidant) to convert the thioether sulphur atom to a sulfone, affording butoxycarboxim in high yield.
