The general procedure for the synthesis of pyridine-3-acetamide from methyl (pyridin-3-yl)acetate is as follows: to a stirred slurry of ethyl 3-pyridylacetate (5.00 g; 30.2 mmol) was slowly added concentrated NH4OH (50 ml) and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. After completion of the reaction, the solution was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to give the crude product. The crude product was washed with mixed solvent of acetonitrile-ether (100 ml, 3:1, v/v) and subsequently dried in a vacuum oven to constant weight to give pyridine-3-acetamide as a white solid. Yield: 76%. The product was characterized as follows: 1H NMR (DMSO-d6): δ 3.43 (s, 2H); 6.98 (bs, 1H); 7.33 (m, 1H); 7.52 (bs, 1H); 7.69 (d, 1H); 8.46 (m, 2H). Mass spectrum (ESI): m/z 137 [M + H]+.
