Amidochlor is an obsolete growth regulator used mainly on turf. Little is known about its chemical properties, environmental fate nor its toxicity to humans or biodiversity. | [Uses]
Turf growth regulator. | [Production Methods]
There is very limited publicly available detail on the full commercial synthesis of amidochlor. However, based on its chemical structure and related acetanilide herbicides, the production generally involves condensation and acylation steps. The process would typically start with 2,6-diethylaniline, which is first reacted with chloroacetyl chloride to form 2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)acetamide. This intermediate is then subjected to a secondary amidation using acetamidomethylamine (or an equivalent acetylated aminomethyl reagent) to introduce the N-(acetamidomethyl) substituent. The process typically uses controlled conditions for chlorination and acylation, followed by purification through recrystallisation or solvent extraction to achieve high purity (≥95–98%). | [Mechanism of action]
Unclear but involves the selective inhibition of plant growth | [Pesticide Type]
Plant Growth Regulator; Herbicide |
