General procedure for the synthesis of 5-bromobenzimidazole-2-carboxylic acid from 2-(hydroxymethyl)-5-bromobenzimidazole: 5-bromo-1H-benzimidazol-2-ylmethanol (0.23 g, 1.0 mmol) was dissolved in acetone (10 mL), and an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate (0.379 g, 2.4 mmol) was added (10 mL). After completion of the reaction, the crude product was recrystallized from water to give 5-bromo-1H-benzimidazole-2-carboxylic acid as a creamy white powder in 37% yield. | [References]
