Shellac red is a mixture of five components, a purple-red to bright red powder. It is readily soluble in alkali solutions and slightly soluble in water, ethanol, and propylene glycol. The higher the purity, the lower the solubility in water. Its solubility at 20°C is 0.0335% in water and 0.916% in 95% ethanol. It is stable to light and heat under acidic conditions, but its hue changes with pH. It appears orange-yellow at pH values below 4.5, orange-red between 4.5 and 5.5, purple-red above pH 5.5, and fades above pH 12. It precipitates in contact with metal ions such as copper and iron. Its maximum absorption wavelength is 488 nm. The oral LD50 in rats is 1.8 g/kg. | [Uses]
Laccaic acid (cas# 60687-93-6) is an organic dye with antimicrobial properties towards various pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Laccaic acid is also used as a component of solar cells due to its photoelectric properties. |
