Dimethyl[bis(methylthio)methyl] phosphonate can be used to treat carbanions in the reaction of bases with aldehydes and ketones.
[Preparation]

(MeO)2P(O)CH(SMe)2 and related S,S-thioacetals of formylphosphonates are  readily prepared in high yields by the Arbuzov reaction of trialkyl phosphites with chloro dithioacetals (eq  1). Other syntheses of thiophosphonates are known.
