A 1 M solution of boron tribromide (BBr3, 5 mL, 5 mmol) in dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) was slowly added to a solution of dichloromethane (20 mL) containing 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)naphthalene (0.5 mmol) at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was gradually warmed to room temperature and stirred continuously for 1 hour. After the reaction was completed, the reaction solution was poured into water (50 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with water (3 x 50 mL) and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), followed by filtration. The filtrate was concentrated and the resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography using ethyl acetate (EtOAc) as eluent to give 4-(2-naphthyl)phenol.
