To a stirred solution of 3-(2-bromophenyl)propionic acid (7.7 g, 33.6 mmol) in methanol (60 mL) at room temperature was added thionyl chloride (0.9 mL, 12 mmol) dropwise. The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 1 hour. Subsequently, additional thionyl chloride (0.9 mL each, total 24 mmol) was added in two additions under reflux conditions, the second addition following the complete reaction of the first. After continuing the reflux reaction for 2 h, the volatile components were removed by distillation under reduced pressure (70 °C, 0.8 kPa). The light yellow oily residue obtained was dissolved in dichloromethane (60 mL) and washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate (60 mL). The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford methyl o-bromophenylpropionate (7.8 g, 96% yield) as a yellow oily liquid. The proton NMR spectral data of the product were in agreement with those reported in the literature [10].
