Questions And AnswerBack Directory
[Preparation]

① Prepare a selenium dioxide aqueous solution with a concentration of 100–200 g/L under forced stirring, and filter after preparation; ② Prepare an industrial-grade sodium sulfide aqueous solution with a concentration of 150–350 g/L, and filter the prepared solution; ③ While stirring the selenium dioxide aqueous solution, simultaneously add sodium sulfide solution and glacial acetic acid dropwise to the selenium dioxide aqueous solution. After the addition is complete, continue stirring for 0.5–3 hours to allow the selenium dioxide to react fully with the sodium sulfide and glacial acetic acid; ④ Centrifuge the solution obtained in step ③ to obtain the Selenium sulfide product, and wash the product with pure water until neutral in the centrifuge; ⑤ Place the neutralized Selenium sulfide in an oven and dry it at 30–120°C until constant weight; ⑥ After cooling and sieving, the Selenium sulfide product is obtained.

[Chemical Properties]

orange to reddish-brown powder
[Uses]

Antifungal; antiseborrheic.
[Brand name]

Exsel (Allergan); Selsun (Chattem).
[General Description]

Selenium sulfide is a bright orange colored powder. Selenium sulfide is insoluble in water. Selenium sulfide is toxic by ingestion and inhalation, and is irritating to skin and eyes. Selenium sulfide is used to make medicated shampoos.
[Air & Water Reactions]

Slightly water soluble.
[Reactivity Profile]

Selenium sulfide may react vigorously with acids to release hydrogen sulfide gas.. May react with oxidizing agents, including inorganic oxoacids, organic peroxides and epoxides.
[Fire Hazard]

Combustible material: may burn but does not ignite readily. When heated, vapors may form explosive mixtures with air: indoors, outdoors and sewers explosion hazards. Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated. Runoff may pollute waterways. Substance may be transported in a molten form.
[Potential Exposure]

Selenium sulfide is used for the treatment of seborrhea, especially in shampoos. The chemical is available over the counter as Selsun, a stabilized buffered suspension. FDA reports that selenium sulfide is an active ingredient in some drug products used for the treatment of dandruff and certain types of dermatitis. A dandruff shampoo containing 1% selenium sulfide is available without a prescription and is recommended for use once or twice a week. By prescription, selenium sulfide is available in a 2.5% shampoo or lotion, with the recommended application limited to 10 minutes for 7 days to avoid the possibility of acute toxic effects. Selenium sulfide is also used topically in veterinary medicine for eczemas and dermatomycoses.
[First aid]

Skin Contact: Flood all areas of body that have contacted the substance with water. Don’t wait to remove contaminated clothing; do it under the water stream. Use soap to help assure removal. Isolate contaminated clothing when removed to prevent contact by others. Eye Contact: Remove any contact lenses at once. Immediately flush eyes well with copious quantities of water or normal saline for at least 20 30 minutes. Seek medical attention. Inhalation: Leave contaminated area immediately; breathe fresh air. Proper respiratory protection must be supplied to any rescuers. If coughing, difficult breathing or any other symptoms develop, seek medical attention at once, even if symptoms develop many hours after exposure. Ingestion: Contact a physician, hospital or poison center at once. If the victim is unconscious or convulsing, do not induce vomiting or give anything by mouth. Assure that the patient’s airway is open and lay him on his side with his head lower than his body and transport immediately to a medical facility. If conscious and not convulsing, give a glass of water to dilute the substance. Vomiting should not be induced without a physician’s advice.
[Shipping]

UN2657 Selenium disulfide, Hazard Class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials.
[Incompatibilities]

Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, epoxides. Violent reaction with silver oxide.
[Definition]

ChEBI: Selenium sulfide is a sulfide salt.
[Indications]

Selenium sulfide suspension (Selsun) is a mixture of selenium monosulfide and a suspension of solid selenium and amorphous sulfur. Selenium acts by inhibiting cellular proliferation, kills yeast organisms, and has high substantivity. Little or no toxicity has been observed when applied directly to normal skin or hair, but these products should not be used on inflamed or exudative skin, where absorption may be increased. They are used in the control of seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, and tinea versicolor.
[Flammability and Explosibility]

Notclassified(100%)
[Toxics Screening Level]

This memo is designed to cover selenium and inorganic selenium compounds with ITSLs all based on the selenium TLV for each of those compounds. The ITSL for selenium and inorganic selenium compounds is 2 μg/m 3 based on an 8-hour averaging time.
