TITANIUM(IV) BROMIDE can be prepared in several ways: (1) Direct bromination: by reacting metallic titanium with bromine; (2) Thermal reduction and bromination of titanium dioxide with carbon: titanium dioxide is mixed thoroughly with powdered carbon (usually carbon black), and bromine vapour is passed through the mixture at a high temperature of 800–1000 °C to facilitate the reaction; (3) Preparation by the reaction of titanium tetrachloride with bromine. |

Titanium(IV) bromide is used as a Lewis acid catalyst in organic synthesis. It reacts with tetrahydrofurnan and 2-methylpyridine and forms adducts such as TiBr4(THF)2 and TiBr4(2-MePy). It is also used for the formation of titanium silicide thin films on silicon substrates. | [reaction suitability]
