The dried fruit of Pimpinella anisum L., a plant in the Apiaceae family, is pale bluish-gray, oval in shape, often attached to a small stem. It is very small, with over 200,000 fruits per kilogram. It contains five segments, each containing a single seed (hence the common term "aniseed," which is inaccurate). It has a slightly sweet, licorice-like aroma, similar to star anise, but differs significantly in shape and size. Native to Egypt, it is also found in southern Europe, Central and South America, northeastern Africa, and India. Spanish-produced varieties are considered the best quality. | [Occurrence]
