(b) N-(4-bromophenyl)-3-oxobutanamide (0.73 g, 2.85 mmol) was dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid. The reaction was heated to 120 °C in an oil bath and sodium sulfate (7 mL) was added and kept at this temperature for 1 hour. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and subsequently poured into a beaker containing ice. The precipitate precipitated was collected by filtration to afford 6-bromo-4-methyl-2(1H)-quinolinone as a tan solid (0.4 g, 60% yield). | [References]
