a) General procedure for the synthesis of ethyl 2-(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)acetate: 2-ethylimidazole (10.0 g, 104 mmol) was dissolved in acetone (80 mL), followed by ethyl bromoacetate (17.4 g, 104 mmol) and potassium carbonate (2.6 g, 18.7 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 12 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was filtered and the solvent was evaporated. The residue was extracted with water and dichloromethane. The organic phase was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate and the solvent was evaporated to give ethyl 2-(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)acetate as a light yellow solid (5.76 g, 30% yield). Mass spectrometry result: m/e = 183.1 [M + H]+. | [References]
