The general procedure for the synthesis of 5-bromo-2-(chloromethyl)pyridine hydrochloride from 5-bromo-2-hydroxymethylpyridine was as follows: 5-bromo-2-hydroxymethylpyridine (500 mg, 2.66 mmol) was dissolved in thionyl chloride (5 mL) at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the excess thionyl chloride was removed by concentration under reduced pressure to afford 5-bromo-2-(chloromethyl)pyridine hydrochloride (635 mg, white solid) in 98% yield.
