Ethametsulfuron-methyl is a selective herbicide. It is moderately soluble in water, volatile and, based on its chemical properties, presents a high risk of leaching to groundwater. It is relatively persistent in both soil and aqueous systems. It has a low mammalian toxicity but may bio-accumulate. Ethametsulfuron-methyl via a multi-step sulfonylurea synthesis starting from 2-amino-4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine, which is sulfonylated with 2-(ethoxycarbonyl)ethylsulfonyl chloride in the presence of a base to form the sulfonamide. This intermediate is activated with phosgene or triphosgene to generate the sulfonyl isocyanate, which undergoes condensation with methyl 2-amino-4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-5-carboxylate under controlled conditions to construct the urea bridge.
