Uses
rac-3-Hydroxypentanoic Acid is one of the fifteen organic acids that are prominent in the urine of a patient undergoing methylmalonic acidosis. rac-3-Hydroxypentanoic acid is also a useful synthetic intermediate that is used in the fine chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
Definition
ChEBI: 3-hydroxypentanoic acid is a short-chain fatty acid that is valeric acid in which one of the methylene hydrogens at position 3 has been replaced by a hydroxy group. It is a short-chain fatty acid, a 3-hydroxy fatty acid and a ketone body. It is functionally related to a valeric acid.
in vivo
3-Hydroxyvaleric acid is potentially brain penetrant and rapidly metabolized to TCA cycle precursors. This ketone body can also derive the neurotransmitters glutamate and GABA, thereby alleviating diseases or conditions characterized by reduced or net brain carbon deficiency, such as glucose transporter type I deficiency syndrome (G1D)[1].
