Description

2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediolmono(2-methylpropanoate) is a volatile organic compound (VOC) being useful in paints and printing inks. As coalescent for latex paints, it finds applications in various fields including coatings, nail care, Printing inks, Solvents for cosmetics and personal care, plasticizers. It is also utilized as a coalescing agent to reduce the minimal film forming temperature (MFFT) during latex film preparation. Study using coupled capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HRGC-MS) has confirmed its detection in polypropylene packed food samples1. It is also employed in pharma industry. It may be further used in the prepare carbon nanotube (CNT) paste employed in field emission displays (FED).

Production Methods

Isobutylaldehyde is used as a raw material, and aldol condensation and Cannizzaro reactions are completed by a one-step reaction process in the presence of a catalyst, which adopts sodium alcoholate as the catalyst. The isobutylaldehyde forms 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate in the presence of the sodium alcoholate catalyst.

General Description

2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate (TMPD-MIB, texanol), a volatile organic compound (VOC), is an important component found in paints and printing inks. It is utilized as a coalescing agent to reduce the minimal film forming temperature (MFFT) during latex film preparation. Its detection in polypropylene packed food samples has been reported by coupled capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HRGC-MS). The performance of various dispersant affecting the dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) in texanol has been studied.

2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate, also referred to as alcohol ester 12 or Texanol alcohol ester, is a kind of water-insoluble high boiling point binary alcohol ester because it has good resin intermiscibility, viscosity, and film forming properties is good, freezing point is low, can effectively reduce the film-forming temperature of high glass transition temperature emulsion paint, is used widely as a kind of novel shaping assistant of filming of coating. Alcohol ester 12 can improve the colour development of paint film weatherability, cleanablity touch-up paint and improvement coating, etc., and toxicity is low, consumption is few, stability to hydrolysis is good, be a kind of safe, be efficiently adapted to the novel green furtherance film of all kinds of synthetic resin emulsion coating.

Toxics Screening Level

The initial threshold screening level (ITSL) for "Texanol" (2-methyl propionic acid monoester with 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol) is 55 μg/m3 based on an annual averaging time.
