It has a role as a toxin, a bacterial metabolite, an EC 2.6.1.* (transaminase) inhibitor, an EC 4.2.1.20 (tryptophan synthase) inhibitor, an EC 2.3.1.* (acyltransferase transferring other than amino-acyl group) inhibitor, an EC 2.1.2.1 (glycine hydroxymethyltransferase) inhibitor and an antimetabolite. It is functionally related to a L-alpha-aminobutyric acid.
