Biological Activity
α-Tocopherol is a radical-chain breaker owing to its anti-oxidant property.', 'Tocopherols (TCP) (vitamin E) are a series (α, β, γ and δ) of chiral organic molecules th at vary in their degree of methylation of the phenol moiety of the chromanol ring. Tocopherols are lipid soluble anti-oxidants th at protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. α-Tocopherol is the form of tocopherol preferentially absorbed by homo sapiens. α-Tocopherol nicotinate is used along the α-Tocopherol acetate, α-Tocopherol succinate and other esterified forms as a vitamin E supplement with similar but differential activities.
in vivo
(±)-α-Tocopherol nicotinate (Vitamin E) (in animal feedings, 50 mg/kg or 585 mg/kg, 7 weeks) significantly increases the proportion of CD4+CD8- T cells and the expression of ICAM-1 in thymic epithelial cells (TECs) isolated of male Fisher rats at high dose concentrations of 585 mg/kg compared to low dose treatment of 50 mg/kg[2].
