Definition
Burkholderia mallei is a bacteria that causes the disease glanders. Glanders is primarily an equine disease. Most cases occur in horses, mules, or donkeys. Rarely, humans may become infected after contact with infected animals. Glanders is manifested in humans in four ways: localized, pulmonary, bloodstream, and chronic. Bloodstream infections can be fatal within 7-10 days. Weaponized B. mallei is a threat because it can re-aerosolize.
