Uses
Tioxazafen is a disubstituted oxadiazole and a broad-spectrum seed treatment nematicide. Tioxazafen is designed to provide consistent broad-spectrum control of nematodes in corn, soy, and cotton[1].
Definition
ChEBI: Tioxazafen is a 1,2,4-oxadizole in which the hydrogens at positions 3 and 5 have been replaced by phenyl and thiophen-2-yl groups, respectively. It is used as a broad spectrum nematicidal seed treatment. It has a role as a nematicide and an agrochemical. It is a member of thiophenes and a 1,2,4-oxadiazole.
Production Methods
Commercial production begins with benzonitrile and thiophene based intermediates, which are converted into amidoximes and thiophene carboximidamides. These precursors undergo cyclisation reactions to form the 1,2,4 oxadiazole ring system, followed by coupling of the phenyl and thiophene groups to yield the disubstituted oxadiazole structure. The crude product is then purified by recrystallisation or solvent extraction to remove residual reactants and by products, producing a stable technical material.
Mechanism of action
Broad-spectrum. It acts through interaction with a nematode-specific insertion of the L3 subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome, leading to disruption of ribosomal translation in nematodes.
