In vanishing creams, in waterproofing cements.
General Description
White to yellow paste or liquid with a weak ammonia odor. May float or sink in water.
Air & Water Reactions
Slightly soluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
AMMONIUM STEARATE has weak oxidizing or reducing powers. Redox reactions can however still occur. The majority of compounds in this class are slightly soluble or insoluble in water. If soluble in water, then the solutions are usually neither strongly acidic nor strongly basic. These compounds are not water-reactive.
Hazard
A nuisance dust.
Health Hazard
None experienced under normal conditions of use. Ingestion causes irritation of mouth and stomach. Contact with eyes causes irritation.
Fire Hazard
Special Hazards of Combustion Products: Toxic ammonia and oxides of nitrogen may form in fires.
Safety Profile
A nuisance dust. When heated todecomposition it emits toxic vapors of NH3.
Synthesis
(1) add the formulated amount of stearic acid, sodium dodecyl sulfate and water in the reaction vessel in turn, and adjust the temperature to 10-25C, stir well, then add ammonia, and then adjust the stirring speed to 1200-1600 rpm, and stir until all of the stearic acid is melted into liquid ammonium stearate with fluidity; (2) Inhale the liquid of ammonium stearate made in step (2) into the emulsifying tank, and emulsify it under the condition that the speed of the emulsifying machine is 2,600-3,200 rpm until the color of the liquid turns into having a silvery-white metallic luster and the viscosity is 350 cps, and then leave it to stand for 1-2 hours, and then filter it, i.e., to obtain the emulsion of ammonium stearate.
