本品は、繊維状の含水ケイ酸マグネシウムであり、主としてMg4Si6O15(OH)2~6H2Oの組成からなる。
解説
セピオライト，Mg9Si12O30(OH)6(OH2)4・6H2O あるいは Mg8Si12O30(OH)4(OH2)4・8H2O 。海泡石ともいう。緻密土状の単斜晶系または斜方晶系の鉱物。硬度2～2.5，比重2。灰色，白色，不透明。変質鉱物として蛇紋岩に産出する。白，クリーム色のものはパイプに加工。トルコ，ギリシアなどが主産地。語源はギリシア語の sepia (イカ) で，形がイカの甲に似ているためにつけられた。

tetrahedron at regular intervals on the chain, so that the united
cell is about 50% larger than that of attapulgite; usually
clay-like, nodular, and fibrous; also compact massive (meerschaum)
or leathery (mountain skin).
