2-(5-Hexynyloxy)tetrahydro-2H-pyran is used as a reagent to synthesize (-)-Pyrinodemin A, a cytotoxic pyridine alkaloid that is isolated from an Okinawan marine sponge (Amphimedon sp.). 2-(5-Hexynyloxy)tetrahydro-2H-pyran is also used as a reagent to synhesize (+)-Lycoricidine, an alkaloid that has antimitotic activity.
