| Synthesis | GENERAL STEPS: 1-benzyl-5-BOC-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-B]pyrrole (1.68 g, 5.5 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (40 mL) under a nitrogen atmosphere, ammonium formate (3.5 g, 55.5 mmol) and palladium/carbon catalyst (600 mg) were added. The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 2 h, subsequently cooled to room temperature and filtered through filter paper padded with methanol. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was dissolved in dichloromethane and washed with sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic phase was separated, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 5-Boc-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-B]pyrrole (1.1 g, 93% yield) as a gray oil.
