Biological ActivityThe gene GAT1 is also called as SLC6A1 (Sodium- and chloride-dependent GABA transporter 1) and encodes a γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transporter. This protein is involved in the removal of GABA from the synaptic cleft. Alterations in this gene have been implicated in anxiety disorders with an increase in panic severity.
