Synthesis

3,4-Dimethylthiophene can be prepared from tetraethoxycarbonylethane and dichloromethyl sulfide. The ester is reduced with LAH to give a diol, and the diacetate is directly pyrolyzed to give 3,4-dimethylthiophene.
