| Synthesis | General procedure: A solution of carbon tetrachloride (50 mL) of bromine (3.17 mL, 61 mmol) was slowly added dropwise to a solution of carbon tetrachloride (250 mL) of triphenylphosphine (16.13 g, 61 mmol) and mixed well with stirring. Subsequently, a solution of carbon tetrachloride (50 mL) of 3,5-dichlorobenzyl alcohol (10.0 g, 56 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was heated to reflux and maintained for 45 minutes. Upon completion of the reaction, hexane was added for dilution. The mixture was filtered through a silica gel column and washed well with hexane. The filtrate was collected and the solvent was removed by concentration under reduced pressure to afford 3,5-dichlorobenzyl bromide (12.79 g, 95% yield).
